1. Introduce the book before you start -

You must provide your child a preview of the book before you start reading it to them. It is quite useful as it gives them an idea about the main characters and the basic plot as there are not many uses of pictures to help them out like in a picture book.

2. If the book isn’t useful, change it -

If the book you are reading to your child is not helping them or being able to grab their attention, you should stop reading it. It is always wise to provide a good experience reading together than continuing going through a book no one is enjoying.

3. Involve them in doing something while they listen –

It is quite difficult to keep the students engaged when there are not a lot of pictures in the book to look at. Many children like to colour or play with Legos or do stickers while they are being read to. When you keep them busy, their attention span stays longer.

4. Don’t have to be in a hurry an entire chapter in a day -

There are some long chapters in a book that is not possible to finish in a single sitting and can be overwhelming to the readers if done so. You can complete half a chapter or a quarter in one day. Of course, if they are willing to read a whole chapter in a day, go for it!

5. Review what you taught in the last class -

At the beginning of each class, do a quick review of what you have completed in the last class. It is very helpful for a little child to remember the plotline and also the name of the characters when the reading continues over a long period.

6. Keep a record of the books you read -

Always keep a record of the books you read to your children. Children love seeing it grow and remembering the books they have completed.
