A Montessori Teacher Acts as a Guide

Montessori teaching is about addressing holistic development of a child- his/her physical, social, emotional and cognitive growth. A Montessori teacher is the guide to help each child to achieve this goal of growth and emerge as an independent learner. The teacher puts emphasis on fostering child’s collaboration and respect of others. Teachers play a swift role in educating the children. They create magical moments wherein the children feel that they have learned by themselves. They are the guides, who play many roles as she/he intervenes, directs, guides, consults and suggest her students.

The students are freely involved in various activities. The Montessori teacher carefully observes them and realises their interest, learning style and temperament. She then understands the developmental needs of each child and their receptive power when they are ready to learn a new concept and skill. Based on the information gained after thorough observation, the teacher chooses lessons and supportive material for learning and gaining their attention all through. Further, as the teacher observes that the students have learned the concept or developed their skill, she takes a step ahead by introducing a lesson far more complex.

The teachers are like source or resource for the student as they perform a task. She constantly encourages, shares their achievements and steer them to better understanding. Working as a guide, the Montessori teacher they create an environment of learning designed to move students from one level of activity to another. Though the teacher plans daily lessons for each child, but he/she should be aware of the changes in the child’s interest, mood, behaviour and progress. Lessons should be brief and precise to intrigue the minds of children so that they are eager to learn more on their own and in groups. They make observations scientifically driven. They avoid rewards and punishments based on their good or poor performance. They never criticize or interfere in a child’s work. In this trusting atmosphere a child’s personality has a room for growth. Children must have the freedom to choose their own activities and learn to behave without any outside intervention or restriction.

2.The Teacher must be a charmer in engaging the children in various activities and exercises. They will rarely interrupt the child but when they do intervene must present a kind of explanation. They must show special attention and affection in a troublesome child without affecting the performance of other children.
3. The duty of the teacher is to present new things when she or he knows that a child has exhausted all the possibilities of those he /she was using before. Help them to grow interest in the learning and know how to use those in their practical life.
